about
This is from the ongoing recording project I call Homebrew. I play all instruments and sing all vocal tracks, and put it all together with minimal producer-y tweaking.
I didn't have a drum kit available when I recorded this, so the percussion is felt mallets on a hardcover dictionary. Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged, if you care.
At one point you may be able to hear a distant, panicky "No no no no!" This was when I realized I was about to record over a good take of the solo. I sort of like it, for no good reason, so I kept it in the mix.
lyrics
Yeah, the drinks were cheap
But that's no excuse
For stumbling home, Whiskeyboots
Dropping the keys
The apartment is dark
And all that Maker's is finding its mark
And you've gotta find someone to believe in
The subway platform
Was hollow and damp
The conductor waved as you went down the ramp
Another late-night denizen
Bathed in the light
Of fluorescents flickering, sepulchral and white
And you've gotta find someone to believe in
Where will you go with your heretic heart?
Settle down, happy enough, if you're smart
But where is the joy in "happy enough"?
And for this you square off, you walk like you're tough
You've gotta find someone to believe in
This and that
And them and those
Well, it's some kind of life, I suppose
But one of these days
You're gonna do
Something dangerous
You know it's true
You've gotta find someone to believe in
What will you do with your apostate soul
When three a.m. opens and swallows you whole?
Your feet scraping out a familiar tattoo on the sidewalk
Your foolish face to the wind
And you gotta find someone to believe in
Oh yeah, the drinks were cheap
But that's no excuse
For stumbling home, Whiskeyboots
You've gotta find someone to believe in
You've gotta find someone to believe in
